Morton would distance himself from street photography in the late 1990s to work solely in the entertainment industry, only to pick it up again in 2017— he began posting his old work on Instagram, where he’s amassed nearly 70,000 followers. He says using the social media platform has allowed him to reconnect with some of his past subjects—or if they were no longer alive, with their loved ones — who have added context to his images. Started by brothers George III, Greg, and their father, George Jr., GV Art + Design is a creative boutique specializing in original artwork, design, and apparel.

Pursue one of three USC Roski undergraduate programs, including a BA Art, a studio-based and immersive BFA Art, or a BFA Design with 2D and 3D applications. Our open curriculum encourages you to explore, combine, mix, match and move freely among media. When it comes to drawing, the sky's the limit on potential subject matter. Whether you use pencils, pens, or charcoal, they can all help you depict ideas inspired by real life (which is a great way to practice your observation skills) or the imagination. Drawing, painting, sculpture, embroidery—and any combination of them—means infinite opportunities to push yourself to make new things. But with so many choices of medium and technique, where do you even start?

No matter what style of art you choose to venture off to, keep in mind the seven elements of art—the creative building blocks that help unravel and create any type of artwork from drawing and painting to embroidery and sculpting. Line, color, form, shape, value, space, and texture are the seven key elements of art that frequently complement, overlap, inform, and harmonize with one another. Having an understanding of these seven elements can make it easier to create your own works of art, whether it be painting, drawing, sculpture, design, or architecture. While this is not an exhaustive list of creative ideas, we’ve included many of our favorite media from acrylic paint to pencil drawing to embroidery to polymer clay. The media can stand alone as their own art projects, but if you’re feeling adventurous, think about combining two or more of them.

Alongside the Arroyo Seco flood channel in Highland Park, there is a small community of unhoused people who have built intricate makeshift homes. In conversation with some residents, Solis reports on the realities of being unhoused in Los Angeles. “I’m thinking, ‘I have to photograph [them]’,” he said of the cholos and cholas featured in Valadez’s artwork. One photograph features an older couple standing on the porch of their home as the lifeless body of a drive-by shooting victim lies on the sidewalk.

Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space. For more than 45 years, Gillberg Design has created custom artwork, furniture, accessories and lighting fixtures their clients. Drawing and painting techniques are similar and can easily result in stunning mixed media pieces; don’t be afraid, however, to think outside the box and combine materials in an unconventional way, such as embroidery and polymer clay. Great artwork tells a story, makes people look twice, and creates a unique experience that can't be matched. Art and illustrations communicate all of that through color, shape and other design elements. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte.
The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings.

Hand-drawn illustration for hip-hop album cover inspired by the "Wisdom Tree" and made in impressionism manner in order to increase the atmosphere. Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda. Hand-beaded light fixtures illuminate the seating areas, which feature tables and chairs from Janus et Cie’s Amalfi Coast outdoor collection. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. All our designs are handmade at our studios in Malibu California with attention to functional design and continuity. We make sure our handcrafted art both beautiful and practical, whether it’s a custom-made lighting fixture or sculptural ceramics, dinning table made from wood, metal, ceramic, stone, concrete or glass. No matter the medium, we deliver art that is pleasing to both the eye and heart. My client wanted a photo manipulated, and partly illustrated, for use on his website.
In tandem with the California-made production, the collection leans into quintessential Americana styles – whether it be through denim or something as simple as plaid boxer shorts. With Eli Russell Linnetz, the designer consistently refines his appetite for portraying life’s moments and his undying love for California. This past January, the designer’s eponymous label, ERL, looked at high school memories for FW24 – defined by sports-inspired attire, layered looks and alluring fabrications that all carried the state’s easygoing persona. Now the designer is digging deeper into the Golden State with his new “Made in California” collection. Our program’s success is rooted in a robust curriculum that emphasizes Design Thinking and User-centered Design.
